You can even get small Automatic tool change spindles for $1000 to $1500. Good luck, I am sure there are lots of cool things you can do with such a machine, although personally the first thing I would do is check all the perpendicularity, and get a new VFD spindle, not the DC spindles they usually come with. I wish more would would be done upon it, but it does work and have all the basic features, even for some fairly serious machining. I have had excellent experience using LinuxCNC twice now with small machines.

Or, what I personally would do is just get an old desktop with parallel port for $200 and load linuxcnc on it, and a breakout board, and interface that to the existing stepper drivers and limit switches. Just buy a GRBL controller to replace the chinese one. If you are going to spend $200 bucks on something, don't spend it on mach 3 or mach 4.
